The Role of a Second Shooter…. Enhancing Your Wedding Photography Coverage

If you have spent any time inquiring with wedding photographers or you follow any wedding photography accounts on Instagram, you have probably seen the term second shooter thrown around. Today I am here to break down what a second shooter is, how they can enhance your wedding photography coverage, and why you should definitely hire a photographer that includes a second shooter.

A second shooter is a seasoned wedding photographer that collaborates with your lead photographer (aka, the person who you booked!) to capture all of the sweet moments of your wedding day. While the lead photographer is busy orchestrating family formals, capturing all of the photos on your shot list, and communicating with the couple, family members, and day-of coordinator; the second shooter is free to get creative with their shots. It is their job to be keen to the small but significant moments that deserve to be captured: your flower girl twirling in a field, your grandparents holding hands, or your aunt’s excited reaction to your wedding gown to name a few.

The second shooter is not there to be an assistant, they are a creative that has been carefully selected to contribute meaningful photos to your wedding gallery.

Finally, in case of an awful emergency (we are talking about me literally breaking a leg on your wedding morning), I can be totally comfortable knowing that my second shooter has been trained by me to capture your wedding day. There will be no hassle of “omg who is going to capture your wedding?” I have a built in security plan through my second shooter, and your wedding will be captured no matter what!

My second shooter is my sweet boyfriend, Hunter. We connected over photography on our first date in 2022, and he has been shooting weddings since 2017! He is a great asset to my team, and the guys love having another dude to connect with! It often gives the groom a sense of relaxation when they can bond over guy stuff, and makes the day go much smoother!
